SAMSARA – Left Hand Side

Our very first project is a music video for the song “Samsara” by Left Hand Side. The song is about loving life even when it’s hard. We wanted to reflect this with the contrast of the man in the apartment vs him outside on the cliffs. We ultimately wanted to showcase the powerhouse that is Bryce Sanderson, which is why the majority of the video focuses on him just doing his thing and being awesome. We wanted to really emphasise these two perspectives by making it as simple as we could and letting the story, the song and the shots/ editing do the work without being overly complicated or with lots of fancy effects. It’s a guy telling his story. That’s it.

On this journey we were greatly inspired by other music videos “Laura” by Bats for Lashes, “All Fired up” by Matt Corby, and “To Build a Home” by Cinematic Orchestra to name a few. The visceral emotions and feelings they could stir up, but also the simplicity of the video as a whole. We tried to achieve something similar. We also took great inspiration from the cinematography of Portrait of a Lady on Fire directed by Céline Sciamma.

That being said getting this music video done would not have been possible without the support of Bryce letting us create this crazy video, and for being such an amazing person to work with. We also want to give a special shout out to Gemma at the New Theatre for letting us take over the theatre for a night, we could not have done this without her.

This project took a few months and a lot of planning to get made. There were some set backs with the pandemic, and a few rough patches (mostly being confused at why the gimble was having a freak-out). In the end it just goes to show what you can do with one camera and two people.

We hope you enjoy Samsara 🙂
